About This Project

Background
Build with Purpose secured a new home for Jesuit Volunteers in Newark, NJ in time for the start of their 2012-2013 placement year.  Since the 1970’s, Newark has had a Jesuit Volunteer (JV) community house, and each year the house is home to 5-6 young men and women. These individuals a year volunteering full-time at various Newark-based agencies that offer direct service to low-income individuals.

The house, however, was in disrepair, was unsafe and was no longer habitable.  Without a new home for the JVs, the city of Newark, the nonprofits and individuals served by the JVs were at risk of losing the program. The Jesuit Volunteer Corps (JVC) turned to Build with Purpose to help secure a new home and, after an extensive search, Build found and purchased a home in August.

Based in four core values—social justice, simple living, community, and spirituality—the Jesuit Volunteer Corps offers women and men an opportunity to work full-time for justice and peace. Living simply in intentional communities of fellow JVs, they work in education, advocacy, direct service, and community service in 39 US cities and in six other countries.  For more information on the JVC go to www.jesuitvolunteers.org.
