Marion P. Thomas Charter School – Phase 1 & Phase 2 370 South 7th Street, Newark, NJ
Project Snapshot/Data Phase I
Background In January 2006, Build with Purpose completed the purchase of the former Chad High School building in Newark as the permanent home for Marion P. Thomas Charter School (MPTCS). Previously, MPTCS had been in three locations during its first seven years. Then in 2008-2009, Build with Purpose once again assisted the school with the expansion of their facility, adding 12 new classrooms and an all-purpose room to its elementary school on South Seventh Street. With $3.4 million in financing from New Jersey Community Capital, Build with Purpose helped the charter school buy 14 vacant properties adjacent to its current site and worked to install modular units for the growing school. The modular units, with their spacious classrooms and large multipurpose room, are permanent additions to the site. The project allowed the school to increase its enrollment from 360 students to 480. Founded by Vision of Hope Community Development Corp., Marion P. Thomas Charter School is a free public school serving students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Since it first opened, in September 1999, the charter school rented two separate facilities before it located its current home. As with many other charter schools, having a place of its own is a dream come true.
Phase III -308 S. 9th St In August 2009, Build with Purpose leased space for one year from The Chad School Foundation on South 9th Street to support additional space for MPTCS middle school. In August 2010, MPTCS assumed the master lease directly from The Chad School Foundation. At the time, Build with Purpose also helped to secure predevelopment dollars from LISC to support minor repairs and improvements to the building as part of the project. This site houses about 400 middle school students.
