Background
In September 2008, students at Jersey City Community Charter School started the school year with a new place to eat their lunches and attend gym class, thanks to a 25,000 square foot addition to their building. In addition to the gymnasium and cafeteria, the expansion added enough classroom space to raise the school’s enrollment to 600 students. Build with Purpose managed the project and secured financing for the $7.7 million expansion. In recognition of the school’s contributions to Jersey City, and of what the addition means to the school, The Reinvestment Fund of Philadelphia awarded the project its prestigious George Bailey Award for Excellence in Community Development.
